Paul, why do teachers tell kids to underline things?
ポールさん、どうして先生は子どもたちにアンダーラインを引きなさいと言うんですか？
ポール：
Hi, Junior.
こんにちは、ジュニア。
We tell kids to underline important parts because it helps them remember better.
大切なところにアンダーラインを引くように言うのは、その方が覚えやすくなるからなんだ。
ジュニア：
But why can’t we just remember without underlining?
でも、線を引かなくても覚えられないの？
Is underlining magic?
アンダーラインって魔法なの？
ポール：
It’s not magic, but it works like a map.
魔法じゃないけれど、地図のような役割をするんだ。
When you underline something, it shows you the most important things.
線を引くことで、一番大切なポイントが分かりやすくなるんだよ。
ジュニア：
So if I underline everything, my whole essay is important?
じゃあ全部に線を引いたら、作文全部が大事ってこと？
ポール：
Well, not quite.
いや、そういうわけじゃないよ。
If you underline too much, it can be confusing.
たくさん線を引きすぎると、かえって分かりにくくなるんだ。
You should only underline key words or ideas.
大切な言葉や考えだけに線を引くのがいいよ。
ジュニア：
What if I underline the wrong idea?
もし違うところに線を引いちゃったらどうするの？
Will the essay get mad at me?
作文に怒られたりする？
ポール：
Essays don’t get mad, Junior.
作文は怒らないよ、ジュニア。
You can always read again and underline the correct parts.
もう一度読み直して、正しいところに線を引けばいいんだ。
ジュニア：
My dad underlined the ingredients on a pizza box once.
前にお父さんがピザの箱の材料表示に線を引いていたんだ。
Was he studying pizza?
ピザの勉強をしていたのかな？
ポール：
That’s funny.
それは面白いね。
Maybe he was checking for something he’s allergic to.
アレルギーのある材料が入っていないか確認していたのかもしれないね。
Underlining helps us find things quickly.
アンダーラインは必要な情報をすぐ見つけるのに役立つんだ。
ジュニア：
I think underlining is fun.

Maybe I’ll underline my homework or my comic books.
