It’s a quiet morning at Vik’s Café. Vikram hands Lin a mop.
Vik’s Caféの静かな朝です。ヴィクラムはリンにモップを渡します。
ヴィクラム：
Lin, today is deep-cleaning day! I made a checklist. It has twenty-three items.
リン、今日は徹底掃除の日だ！チェックリストを作ったんだ。23項目あるぞ。
リン：
Twenty-three? Vikram, the café looks fine.
23個？ヴィクラム、このカフェはきれいに見えるけど。
ヴィクラム：
It looks fine to you. But fine is not clean. Clean is clean.
君には問題なく見えるんだろう。でも「問題ない」と「きれい」は違う。「きれい」は「きれい」なんだ。
リン：
That’s deep, man.
深いね、それ。
Lin leans on the mop and closes her eyes. Then the front door opens.
リンはモップにもたれて目を閉じます。すると、入口のドアが開きます。
検査官：
Good morning. I’m with the city health department. Surprise inspection.
おはようございます。市の保健当局の者です。抜き打ち検査です。
ヴィクラム：
Oh! Oh no. Welcome! Welcome. Can I get you some tea? A muffin?
おお！なんてことだ。ようこそ！ようこそ。紅茶はいかがですか？マフィンは？
検査官：
No thank you. I’ll just walk through the kitchen.
結構です。キッチンを見せていただきます。
ヴィクラム：
Of course! Let me show you around. We’ll start over here. Far from the kitchen.
もちろんです！ご案内します。まずはこちらから。キッチンから遠いところから。
Vikram guides the inspector toward the front window. Behind them, Lin suddenly starts moving fast, shoving dirty trays and bags into the back room.
ヴィクラムは検査官を正面の窓のほうへ案内します。その後ろで、リンは突然すばやく動き始め、汚れたトレーや袋を奥の部屋へ押し込みます。
ヴィクラム：
This is where our customers sit. I chose every chair myself. Each one has a story.
ここがお客様に座っていただく場所です。椅子は全部、私が自分で選びました。一脚一脚に物語があるんですよ。
検査官：
That’s nice, but I really need to see the kitchen.
それは素敵ですね。でも、私はキッチンを見なければならないんです。
Lin appears from the kitchen, calm as ever.
リンがキッチンから姿を現します。いつもどおり落ち着いています。
リン：
Kitchen’s ready.
キッチン、準備できたよ。
The inspector walks through and nods approvingly.
検査官はキッチンを見て回り、満足そうにうなずきます。
検査官：
Everything looks great. You pass.
すべて問題ありません。合格です。
ヴィクラム：
Lin, you saved us! How did you clean up so fast?
リン、助かったよ！どうやってあんなに早く片付けたんだ？
リン：
I didn’t clean anything. I put it all in the back room.
何も掃除してないよ。全部、奥の部屋に入れただけ。
ヴィクラム：
You… what?
君……何だって？
Vikram opens the back room door. A tower of trays and bags falls toward him.
ヴィクラムが奥の部屋のドアを開けます。積み上げられたトレーと袋がヴィクラムのほうへ崩れ落ちてきます。
リン：
Hey, look at it this way. Now we only have to clean one room instead of twenty-three things.
まあ、こう考えようよ。これで23個のものを掃除する代わりに、1部屋だけ掃除すればいいんだから。
