Oscar and Lucy are sitting in a café. Oscar has written a review of a new art exhibition for a local magazine.
オスカーとルーシーはカフェに座っています。オスカーは地元の雑誌のために、新しい美術展のレビューを書きました。
Oscar: Lucy, read this. I wrote a review of the new exhibition downtown. It’s brilliant.
オスカー：ルーシー、これを読んでみて。街中で開かれている新しい美術展のレビューを書いたんだ。傑作だよ。
Lucy reads the review. She turns the paper over, then turns it back.
ルーシーはレビューを読みます。紙を裏返し、また表に戻しました。
Lucy: Oscar, I read this three times. I don’t understand a single word.
ルーシー：オスカー、これを3回読んだけど、一言も意味がわからないわ。
Oscar: That’s because the meaning is deep! You have to read between the lines.
オスカー：それは意味が深いからだよ！ 行間を読まないと。
Lucy: There’s nothing between the lines. It’s just big words in a row.
ルーシー：行間なんて何もないわ。ただ難しい言葉が並んでいるだけ。
Oscar: Every word was carefully chosen. This review will change how people see art.
オスカー：どの言葉も慎重に選んだんだ。このレビューは、人々の芸術の見方を変えるよ。
Lucy: It will change how people see you. And not in a good way.
ルーシー：変わるのは、みんなのあなたへの見方でしょうね。それも良い意味じゃなく。
Oscar: You don’t understand. A great review should challenge the reader.
オスカー：君はわかってない。優れたレビューは、読者に考えさせるものなんだ。
Lucy: A great review should make sense.
ルーシー：優れたレビューは、まず意味が通じるべきよ。
Oscar: Fine. I’ll make it simpler. For the intermediate readers.
オスカー：わかった。もっと簡単に書き直すよ。中級レベルの読者向けにな。
Oscar writes for ten minutes. He shows Lucy the new version.
オスカーは10分ほど書き直し、新しい原稿をルーシーに見せました。
Lucy: Oscar, this is worse. You used the word “transcendent” four times.
ルーシー：オスカー、前よりひどいわ。「transcendent（超越した）」って単語を4回も使ってるじゃない。
Oscar: Because the art transcends!
オスカー：だって、その芸術は超越しているんだから！
Lucy: I also wrote a review of that exhibition.
ルーシー：私も、その美術展のレビューを書いたのよ。
Oscar: You? When?
オスカー：君が？ いつ？
Lucy: Last week. The magazine published it this morning.
ルーシー：先週よ。今朝、その雑誌に載ったわ。
Oscar: What? What did you write?
オスカー：何だって？ どんなことを書いたんだ？
Lucy: “The art was fine. Go see it.”
ルーシー：「その芸術はよかったよ。見に行ってみて。」
Oscar: That’s it? That’s not a review! That’s a text message!
オスカー：それだけ？ それはレビューじゃない！ ただのメッセージじゃないか！
Lucy: The magazine said it was their most popular review ever. They want me to write more.
ルーシー：雑誌の編集部は、過去最高に人気のレビューだったって言ってたわ。また書いてほしいそうよ。
Oscar: This is the worst day of my life.
オスカー：人生最悪の日だ……。
Lucy: I could teach you. My first lesson: use fewer words.
ルーシー：教えてあげてもいいわ。最初のレッスンは「言葉をもっと減らすこと」。
Oscar: I don’t need fewer words. The world needs bigger dictionaries!
オスカー：言葉を減らす必要なんてない。世界には、もっと分厚い辞書が必要なんだ！
