Lin arrives at the café two hours late. The kitchen looks like a laboratory. There are muffins everywhere.
リンは2時間遅れてカフェに到着します。キッチンはまるで実験室のようで、あちこちにマフィンが散らばっています。
リン：
Vikram. What happened in here?
ヴィクラム、ここで何があったの？
ヴィクラム：
Lin! Perfect timing. I’ve been experimenting with my blueberry muffin recipe all morning.
リン！ちょうどいいところに来た。朝からずっとブルーベリーマフィンのレシピを試していたんだ。
リン：
There must be a hundred muffins in here.
ここに100個くらいマフィンがあるんじゃない？
ヴィクラム：
Each batch has one small change. Different sugar levels, different baking times, different amounts of cinnamon.
それぞれの焼き上がりは少しずつ違うんだ。砂糖の量を変えたり、焼き時間を変えたり、シナモンの量を変えたりね。
リン：
That’s a lot of muffins.
ずいぶんたくさん作ったね。
ヴィクラム：
I need you to taste each batch and tell me which one is the best. Be very specific with your feedback.
全部食べ比べて、一番いいものを教えてほしいんだ。感想はできるだけ詳しくお願い。
リン：
You want me to eat free muffins and give my opinion. This is the best job you’ve ever given me.
無料でマフィンを食べて感想を言えばいいの？今までで一番いい仕事じゃない。
Lin grabs a muffin and takes a bite.
リンはマフィンを1つ手に取り、一口食べます。
リン：
This one’s good.
これはおいしいね。
ヴィクラム：
Great! Now try the others and compare.
いいね！じゃあ他のも食べ比べてみて。
Lin eats several more muffins over the next twenty minutes. Vikram watches eagerly.
その後20分ほどかけて、リンはさらに何個もマフィンを食べます。ヴィクラムは期待に満ちた表情で見守っています。
ヴィクラム：
So? What’s the result? Which batches stood out?
それで？結果はどう？どの焼き上がりが一番印象に残った？
リン：
Honestly, batch C. I kept going back to that one.
正直に言うとCかな。何度もあれに手が伸びちゃった。
ヴィクラム：
Really? Let me check my notes. Batch C… batch C…
本当？メモを確認してみよう。Cは…Cは…。
Vikram flips through his notebook. He stops. He stares at the page.
ヴィクラムはノートをめくります。そして手を止め、そのページをじっと見つめます。
ヴィクラム：
Lin.
リン。
リン：
Yeah?
なに？
ヴィクラム：
Batch C is my original recipe. No changes at all. It was the control batch.
Cは元のレシピだった。何も変えていない。比較用の基準だったんだ。
リン：
So you spent all morning making a hundred muffins to discover your recipe was already great.
つまり朝中ずっと100個もマフィンを作って、元のレシピが最初から一番良かったって分かったわけね。
ヴィクラム：
I suppose that is what happened, yes.
そういうことになるね、たしかに。
リン：
Well, at least you have a result. And I have a stomachache. Totally worth it though.
まあ、結果が分かったんだからよかったじゃない。それに私はお腹が痛いけどね。でも十分その価値はあったよ。
