So Michael, why do teachers tell us to underline important words in books?
マイケルさん、どうして先生は本の大事な言葉に線を引きなさいと言うんですか？
マイケル：
Hi, Junior.
こんにちは、ジュニア。
We underline important words so we can remember them better.
大切な言葉に線を引くのは、より覚えやすくするためなんだ。
It helps us find them again quickly.
あとで素早く見つけられるようにもなるよ。
ジュニア：
But doesn’t that make the words feel trapped under a line?
でも、それって言葉が線の下に閉じ込められているみたいじゃない？
Like they’re in word jail?
まるで「言葉の刑務所」に入っているみたい。
マイケル：
That’s a fun way to think about it.
面白い考え方だね。
But no, underlining helps us pay attention to the most important parts of what we read.
でも、線を引くことで読んだ内容の中でも特に大切な部分へ意識を向けられるんだ。
ジュニア：
My teacher says I should underline the description of the main character,
先生は主人公の説明に線を引きなさいと言うんだけど、
but that’s confusing.
それがよく分からないんだ。
マイケル：
Why is it confusing, Junior?
どうして分からないのかな、ジュニア？
ジュニア：
Because if I underline everything about the character, the whole page has lines.
主人公について全部に線を引いたら、ページ中が線だらけになるから。
Then nothing looks important anymore.
そうなると、何が大事なのか分からなくなっちゃうよ。
マイケル：
You know, that’s actually a really good point.
なるほど、それは本当にいい指摘だね。
Maybe underlining everything isn’t the best way to study.
何でもかんでも線を引くのは、いい勉強法じゃないのかもしれない。
ジュニア：
I like to draw little pictures next to important words instead,
僕は大事な言葉の横に小さな絵を描く方が好きなんだ。
like a tiny hat for the main character.
例えば主人公なら、小さな帽子の絵を描いたりするよ。
マイケル：
That’s creative.
それは創造的だね。
Drawing pictures might actually help you remember better than underlining.
絵を描く方が、線を引くより覚えやすい人もいるかもしれないね。

See?
ほらね？
Pictures are better than lines.
絵の方が線よりいいんだよ。
Lines are confusing, but pictures tell a story.
線は混乱するけど、絵なら物語を伝えてくれるからね。
マイケル：
You might be onto something, Junior.
それは案外いい考えかもしれないね、ジュニア。
Maybe I should suggest drawing to the kids I help at the library.
図書館で手伝っている子どもたちにも、絵を描く方法を勧めてみようかな。
