Lucy is cooking in the kitchen. Lin walks in, following the smell.
ルーシーがキッチンで料理をしています。リンはそのにおいにつられて、部屋に入ってきます。
Lin: Grandma, that smells incredible. What are you making?
リン：おばあちゃん、すごくいいにおい。何を作ってるの？
Lucy: A special soup. I learned this recipe in Vietnam, thirty years ago.
ルーシー：特別なスープよ。30年前にベトナムで覚えたレシピなの。
Lin: Can I taste it?
リン：味見してもいい？
Lucy: You can taste it if you help me cook it.
ルーシー：手伝ってくれたら味見していいわよ。
Lin: Fine. What do I do?
リン：わかった。何をすればいいの？
Lucy: First, chop those vegetables. Small pieces. The right way.
ルーシー：まず、その野菜を切ってちょうだい。小さくね。ちゃんと正しく切るのよ。
Lin chops the vegetables into large, uneven pieces.
リンは野菜を大きくてバラバラな大きさに切ります。
Lucy: Lin, those pieces are still too big. Cut them smaller.
ルーシー：リン、その切り方じゃまだ大きすぎるわ。もっと小さく切って。
Lin: They’ll taste the same, Grandma.
リン：でも味は同じでしょ、おばあちゃん。
Lucy: No. Size changes the flavor. Cut them again.
ルーシー：違うの。大きさで味が変わるのよ。もう一回切り直して。
Lin: OK, OK.
リン：はいはい。
Lin chops the vegetables smaller. Lucy nods and adds them to the pot.
リンは野菜をもっと小さく切ります。ルーシーはうなずいて、それを鍋に入れます。
Lin: Can I taste it now?
リン：今なら味見していい？
Lucy: No. It needs one more ingredient. The secret ingredient.
ルーシー：まだだめ。あとひとつ材料が必要なの。秘密の材料がね。
Lin: Ooh. What is it? Something rare?
リン：おお、何それ？珍しいもの？
Lucy hands Lin a small container of salt.
ルーシーはリンに小さな塩の容器を渡します。
Lin: Salt? The secret ingredient is salt?
リン：塩？秘密の材料って塩なの？
Lucy: The secret ingredient is patience, Lin. And also salt.
ルーシー：秘密の材料は「忍耐」よ、リン。それと塩もね。
Lin: This soup better be worth it.
リン：このスープ、それだけの価値があるといいけど。
After thirty minutes, Lucy serves the soup. Lin takes a sip.
30分後、ルーシーはスープをよそいます。リンはひと口飲みます。
Lin: OK. This is the best thing I’ve ever tasted.
リン：うん、これは今まで食べた中でいちばんおいしい。
Lucy: See? Now you can make this yourself. You could cook dinner sometimes.
ルーシー：ほらね？これであなたも自分で作れるわよ。たまには夕飯を作ってもいいんじゃない？
Lin: You’re right. If I can cook like this, I’ll never need to move out and buy my own food.
リン：その通りだね。こんな料理が食べられるなら、家を出て自分で食べ物を買う必要なんてなくなるよ。
Lucy: That is not what I meant, Lin.
ルーシー：そういう意味で言ったんじゃないのよ、リン。
Lin: Too late. I’m your roommate forever now.
リン：もう遅いよ。これからずっとおばあちゃんのルームメイトになるからね。
