Eddy walks into a coffee shop. Oscar is sitting at a table, typing fast on his laptop.
エディはコーヒーショップに入ります。オスカーはテーブルに座り、ノートパソコンで勢いよく文字を打っています。
エディ：
Hey! What are you working on?
ねえ！何を書いてるの？
オスカー：
Nothing. Go away.
何でもない。あっちへ行ってくれ。
エディ：
Is it an essay? A letter?
エッセイ？それとも手紙？
オスカー：
Eddy, please. I’m on my last chapter and I need to hurry up and finish.
エディ、頼むよ。今は最後の章なんだ。急いで書き終えないといけないんだ。
エディ：
Last chapter?! You’re writing a book?!
最後の章！？本を書いてるの！？
オスカー：
It’s a novel, Eddy. A serious literary novel.
小説だよ、エディ。本格的な文学小説なんだ。
エディ：
That’s awesome! What’s it about?
すごいじゃない！どんな話なの？
Oscar pauses and closes the laptop slightly.
オスカーは少し手を止め、ノートパソコンを少し閉じます。
オスカー：
It’s about… two colleagues at a school. One is a brilliant but misunderstood art teacher. The other is a very energetic gym teacher.
学校で働く二人の同僚の話なんだ。一人は才能があるのに誤解されがちな美術教師。もう一人は、とても元気な体育教師さ。
エディ：
Wait a second…
ちょっと待って……。
オスカー：
It’s fiction, Eddy.
フィクションだからね、エディ。
エディ：
What’s the gym teacher’s name?
体育教師の名前は？
オスカー：
His name is Teddy.
テディという名前だ。
エディ：
Teddy?! And the art teacher?
テディ！？じゃあ美術教師は？
オスカー：
… Boscar.
……ボスカー。
エディ：
Oscar! That’s us!
オスカー！それ、僕たちじゃないか！
オスカー：
It is absolutely not us. Boscar is taller than me.
まったく違う。ボスカーは私より背が高い。
Eddy grabs the laptop and reads a line from the screen.
エディはノートパソコンをつかみ、画面の一文を読み上げます。
エディ：
“Teddy was the only person who made Boscar feel like he wasn’t stuck in a small pond.”
「テディは、ボスカーに『自分は小さな池の中だけの存在じゃない』と思わせてくれた、たった一人の人だった。」
Oscar’s face turns red. He reaches for the laptop.
オスカーは顔を真っ赤にして、ノートパソコンへ手を伸ばします。
オスカー：
Give that back immediately. You’re reading it out of context.
今すぐ返せ。それじゃ文脈を無視して読んでるだけだ。
エディ：
Oscar, that’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said about me!
オスカー、それは今まで僕に言ってくれた中で一番うれしい言葉だよ！
オスカー：
I didn’t say it. Boscar said it. About Teddy. Who is fictional.
私が言ったんじゃない。ボスカーがテディについて言ったんだ。二人とも架空の人物だからな。
エディ：
I love you too, buddy.
僕も大好きだよ、相棒。
オスカー：
I need new places to write where you can’t find me.
君に見つからない場所で執筆できる新しい場所を探さないといけないな。
